PORTSMOUTH, Va. — One person has died and another was hospitalized following a fire that started in the Olde Towne area of Portsmouth Tuesday morning, a Portsmouth Fire & Rescue official confirmed to News 3.

Around 5:50 a.m., crews responded to a house fire in the 300 Block of Court Street. Two people were reported to have been in the two-story structure at the time of the call. One resident was found inside the building by crews — they were pronounced dead, according to Portsmouth Fire & Rescue.

Another resident was sent to Norfolk General, according to Portsmouth Fire & Rescue.

An official from the Portsmouth Fire Department says 12 crews were at the scene to respond to the fire.

People near the scene told News 3 that the burned house is over a century old.
