HAMPTON, Va. — A fire at an apartment complex in Hampton sent one person to the hospital and displaced multiple residents Monday afternoon.
City of Hampton Fire and Rescue crews responded to the apartment complex fire along Marcella Road, in the MAA Township area shortly after 12 p.m. Three people were evaluated by crews on scene, with one person taken to the hospital for further treatment.
When I arrived at the scene, crews were spraying water on the building as smoke filled the area and neighbors watched nearby. One resident shared pictures showing flames coming from the building and heavy smoke filling the parking lot.
Lekendra Chavis lives across from the building that caught fire. She said she received a notification about the fire, looked outside, and saw smoke and firefighters rushing in.
"Lots of black smoke I saw a bit of flames just a ton of smoke," Chavis said. "It was just crazy to see something like that actually happen here in a place where you live at in the area so yea it's just insane."
Emotions were high with residents standing nearby watching crews work. Another neighbor who did not want to go on camera told me she lives next to the building. She said she smelled smoke and left with her two dogs.
The department said the fire appears to be accidental but that they are still on scene investigating. The American Red Cross is offering help to neighbors who can't return home.
